James Madison edges out Virginia in NOVA 7s Collegiate National Qualifier

Five teams took to the field in Manassas, Virginia for the 3rd NOVA Collegiate 7s National Qualifier and there were some tremendous moments for the University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, Virginia Tech, James Madison University and the University of Virginia as they battled it out for a bid to the National 7s Championship.

Many of the teams were plagued by fatigue and injury as they had played in 15s matches the previous day, but there were standout performances from Women of the Matches junior Frankie Beller (UVA), sophomores Marissa Spaider (VT) and Kathryn Hobbs (UNC), as well as the stunning debut of freshman Mia VanderToom (JMU).

The final came down to long time Mason-Dixon rivals, James Madison University and the University of Virginia. Both teams faced injuries throughout the day, but JMU came out on top after a previous loss to the Hoos in pool play, with a 28-19 victory over UVA and earned an automatic bid to the USA Rugby College 7s National Championships, which will be held May 27-29 in Cary, North Carolina.

NOVA WRFC thanks all of the teams for their hard work and participation and wishes JMU luck at Nationals!
